Social Studies- Country Research Report due 1-15-16

Attached are the directions, rubric (guidelines) and template to help you with this project.

The children will be getting a copy of this tomorrow to take home as well.

COUNTRY RESEARCH REPORT
TRAVEL BROCHURE
Project Due Friday 1/15/16

In Social Studies we are studying communities around the world.  For this project, you will choose a country, from the list below, to research and create a travel brochure.  Attached is a template that you will use to record your research and then create your own travel brochure.

Any Community in…
Africa, Asia, South America, The Caribbean, Middle East, Europe, Southeast Asia, Oceania or Australia
Follow these directions:
  1. Choose a country to research and circle it in the above list.
  2. Read each element of the template carefully.
  3. Go to the library and borrow a book and/or find information off the internet from a reliable source. These resources will be recorded in your brochure.
  4. As you research, take notes in your Social Studies notebook.
  5. After looking over your notes and making sure you have all the required information, record it on the template.
  6. The template is a graphic organizer for you to gather your information.
  7. You will then create your own travel brochure on a large construction paper, folded with all the appropriate parts from the graphic organizer.  Use your creativity and create it the way you’d like.
  8. You will also create a postcard, imagining that you’d been to this specific place, and you are telling the reader about your experience.
  9. You may decorate the brochure with magazine cut-outs or printed pictures of things that are related to your researched country. (examples: food, people, clothing, instruments, etc.)
  10. Look over your travel brochure and make sure everything is complete, accurate, and written in your own words.  Make it presentable so that someone would want to travel to your community! Make sure you share your experience on your postcard!
  11. Attach the rubric to your report.

Steps to Success:

Ø  Follow the directions carefully.
Ø  Use the rubric to guide you.
Ø  Ask an adult to help you.
Ø  Double-check your work.

Ø  Hand in your project on time.

Holiday Party/ Gift Exchange/ Sitter for Zeus

Good Evening,

Next week, Monday December 21, we will be celebrating the holidays in class 3-203 at 1 pm.  Please send in any snacks, treats and drinks that you would like for our children to have during the celebration.

Also, we are having a gift exchange as well for the holidays.  I will be sending home a letter tomorrow with the children explaining everything in detail.  If you wish, your child does not have to participate. Please send back the permission slip ASAP with whether you would like your child to participate or not.

Lastly, we need a warm, loving and spacious home for our class pet, Zeus, the bearded dragon. I will also be sending home a letter advising you what the requirements are to take care of him.  Please return that slip ASAP.  Once, you give permission for your family and your child to babysit him for the holiday break, I will put all the children's names in a hat and pick one family to take him home.  That family and I will discuss a good time to come and pick him up, along with his belongings :-).

Once again, thank you for all your support.  I really appreciate all who contributed to my wish list for the book fair.  That was very generous of you.  I purchased all the books today!  They will soon be in our class library for your children to borrow for reading.

I hope everyone has a safe and joyful holiday break.  Happy New Year as well!

Science HW assignment due tomorrow (For Bus children only!)

I'm so sorry for the inconvenience, but I forgot to hand out the science/writing assignment to the bus children before they left.

The other children in the class received the assignment.

I will take into consideration, if any of the bus children to do not receive this in time, in order to complete the HW for tomorrow.

Here is the assignment:
Write to the soda companies to inquire about the discrepancy between the can size and the advertised volume.  The customer service departments of such companies can provide an explanation for the air space.

Thanks again and sorry for the inconvenience.

Eduplace.com (Social Studies Textbook)- Accessing and Logging In

Eduplace.com

This is a website where we can access an online social studies textbook, since we do not have an actual text.
Everything on here follows along with the NYC scope and sequence, as well as, is aligned with the common core standards.

Step 1: Go to eduplace.com

Step 2: At the bottom of the page, click on eservices

Step 3: You will find the Log-in page.
Username- nycgrade3
Password- nyc

Then click, sign in.

Step 4: Click on the picture of the Social Studies text, World Communities Now and Long Ago.

Step 5: Once, you click on the text, you will then have access to the entire text and all the chapters.

* You may have to play around with the site to get used to it.  It can be glitchy, so understand that.

**  Due to the site being glitchy at times, I will take that into consideration.  Therefore, once I post the homework for an assignment, I will make sure the children have a few days to complete it.
Please also understand, that the site may not always work for me as well in class, so I may need a few days to go over the homework that was assigned.

P.S. You may need to clear your computers cache in order to proceed in using the website.  I have had to do that in the past.

Hope this helps!  Please let me know if you have any other questions.
